Twenty week scan

So we went to the hospital for our twenty week scan yesterday which marks the halfway point of the pregnancy. It was so great to see our little one kicking and wriggling around in there and it has made me even more excited about having another baby.

The amount of detail we could see was incredible.  At one point we zoomed in on the heart and could actually see the little valves working away.  The sonographer changed the colours on the screen so that we saw the blood flowing into the heart in blue, and the blood flowing out in red.

We could see every little finger, every single toe, and a lot of detail on the face, but we looked away at the point when we could have checked whether it is a boy or a girl. Seeing the way the baby is pummelling me I’m not surprised I felt movement so early on, she’s certainly very active already.

The results of the scan showed that everything is going well and the baby is growing normally.  She is slightly larger than average for twenty weeks, perhaps not great news for me but nothing to worry about.

My husband was really excited to see the baby moving around so much. I think the scan is a great way to make the father feel involved at this stage as they can’t really appreciate what is happening in there until they can feel the kicks on the outside. My little boy was fascinated at first, but he lost interest pretty quickly and got a bit when the sonographer started taking detailed measurements.

The only downside for me was that I drank a load of water before the scan according to the hospital instructions and I was absolutely desperate for the toilet throughout the whole appointment!
