Pregnancy and Acne: What is the Link?
August 27, 2010
Pregnancy and acne aren’t often talked about together, but more women suffer from adult acne during pregnancy than we realize.
Pregnancy symptoms can change dramatically throughout your pregnancy, week by week, so one week you may be suffering terrible breakouts, and the next you may develop a clear radiant complexion.
Adult acne can strike at any time during your pregnancy and can last for days, weeks or months.
What’s the Relationship Between Pregnancy and Acne?
High levels of hormones known as androgens account provide the link between pregnancy and acne. These can stimulate the skin’s sebaceous glands to grow and produce oil or sebum.
Sebum mixes with the dead skin cells in your hair follicles to block your pores and create an environment where bacteria can thrive. This leads to inflammation in the skin and outbreaks of adult acne.
Treating adult acne in pregnancy is tricky because many pharmaceutical treatments can be damaging to the baby.
The oral prescription drug Accutane (isotretinoin) can cause serious birth defects so should certainly be avoided, and tetracycline, doxycycline, and minocycline can cause teeth and bone abnormalities in the growing fetus.
Natural or topical treatments may well be suitable for use in pregnancy, and acne can be cured in a number of ways.
