Twenty week scan

February 26, 2008

So we went to the hospital for our twenty week scan yesterday which marks the halfway point of the pregnancy. It was so great to see our little one kicking and wriggling around in there and it has made me even more excited about having another baby.

The amount of detail we could see was incredible.  At one point we zoomed in on the heart and could actually see the little valves working away.  The sonographer changed the colours on the screen so that we saw the blood flowing into the heart in blue, and the blood flowing out in red.

We could see every little finger, every single toe, and a lot of detail on the face, but we looked away at the point when we could have checked whether it is a boy or a girl. Seeing the way the baby is pummelling me I’m not surprised I felt movement so early on, she’s certainly very active already.

The results of the scan showed that everything is going well and the baby is growing normally.  She is slightly larger than average for twenty weeks, perhaps not great news for me but nothing to worry about.

My husband was really excited to see the baby moving around so much. I think the scan is a great way to make the father feel involved at this stage as they can’t really appreciate what is happening in there until they can feel the kicks on the outside. My little boy was fascinated at first, but he lost interest pretty quickly and got a bit when the sonographer started taking detailed measurements.

The only downside for me was that I drank a load of water before the scan according to the hospital instructions and I was absolutely desperate for the toilet throughout the whole appointment!

Pregnancy related pains

I felt some odd pains in my abdomen this week so I called my midwife to check if she knew what they were.  She reassured me that they were nothing to worry about, but I thought I’d share the experience with you in case any of you are feeling something similar. I was out for [...]

Does childbirth hurt?

This was the question that a 34 week pregnant lady asked me at my Aqua Natal class tonight.  ‘You’ve done it before.  Does it really hurt that much?’ It’s a question that I never know how to answer.  There seems to be some sort of unwritten agreement between mums that they don’t talk about the [...]

Feeling those first kicks

So I think I’ve finally reached that mid pregnancy bloom when you feel full of energy and optimism, although I’m still fairly tired by the end of the day.  It seems just as I’ve started to forget that I’m pregnant, the baby has chosen to remind me by giving me a few little kicks. I [...]

Skiing whilst pregnant

I’ve just got back from a very relaxing week long holiday in the French Alps with my husband’s family, so yes, I admit, my last post was written in advance and published by my editor. As well as beautiful scenery, tasty food, and great company, it was lovely to have the chance to relax a [...]

Having a water birth

In my last post I talked about the possibility of having a water birth.  Assuming I’m still considered a low risk pregnancy by the time of the birth, the hospital I am using has a birthing centre with a few pools, and they are very keen on promoting water births. Although I didn’t give birth [...]

Choosing an antenatal class

Last week I started Aqua natal at my local pool.  It is basic exercises in the water which are specially designed for pregnant ladies, it’s taught by a qualified midwife, and it is lots and lots of fun.  It’s also a great place to meet other pregnant women and exchange advice and ideas, and a [...]
