Bizarre dreams during pregnancy
January 27, 2008
I thought I’d continue the theme of sleep problems in pregnancy by talking about pregnancy dreams. If you are having freaky dreams about your pregnancy, giving birth, or what it will be like when your baby arrives, rest assured you are not the only one.
Throughout my first pregnancy I had really scary dreams about doing something wrong after the baby arrived. The most common one was losing the baby and being able to hear it cry but not knowing where it was, but they got as bizarre as giving birth to a twelve year old child and trying to work out how to breastfeed this walking talking person who was nearly as tall as me!
This time the dreams have changed quite a bit. I guess having done it all once I am fairly confident I won’t misplace the baby, drop it on its head or forget to feed it. The dreams this time all seem to be about having a million things to do and not being able to do any of them. I wake up exhausted, convinced that I have failed miserably but unable to remember why.
I’m pretty sure this is because I am worrying a bit about how to cope with two children; looking after a newborn was exhausting the first time and I think it must be harder with a toddler. I’m told that freaky dreams during pregnancy are just a way for us to work through our worries and fears about pregnancy, birth and parenthood in a non threatening way.
On the plus side I am having a few lovely dreams about when my little boy was tiny, as well as how he might react to the new baby. I’m glad to say so far he is very excited about the new arrival and is very gentle and kind to her. Of course this is only in my dreams as he doesn’t understand the concept of a new brother or sister yet. Let’s hope at least some dreams do come true.
If anybody has some strange pregnancy dreams to share I’d love to hear them.

Out and about with two childrenYesterday I walked past a young father struggling to keep control of his hyperactive toddler while pushing his newborn’s pram one handed. I managed a sympathetic smile as I zoomed past smugly with my single buggy, toddler securely strapped in, and then it struck me that I had just seen a vision of myself a [...]
Amniocentesis screeningAfter a few days staying with my parents, I returned home to find some welcome news sitting on my doormat. The results of the nuchal screening scan, when combined with the results of a blood test as well as my age, all show that the baby is at very low risk of developing Downs Syndrome. [...]
All about morning sicknessOk so I’ve been fairly quiet on the subject of the most nauseating of pregnancy syptoms, morning sickness. I guess I didn’t want to put off anybody that was trying to get pregnant! Unfortunately, nausea and vomiting is one of the stages of pregnancy that over half of pregnant women go through, and I am no [...]
First ultrasound scanSo at last I know how many weeks I am! According to the dating scan I am now twelve weeks, which is great news as hopefully the risk of miscarriage is now quite low. I was really impressed with the scan as a whole. When I was in Switzerland my gynaecologist had an ultrasound machine [...]

We have been travelling around visiting family and friends over the Christmas period which has been a little bit tiring but a huge amount of fun at the same time. My husband and I decided that as I had already heard the baby’s heartbeat [...]
